What Section B is
Section B is the accident benefits portion of every Alberta auto policy. It funds medical treatment after a collision regardless of who was at fault, and it is paid by your own insurer. Physiotherapy, massage, psychology and chiropractic can all be covered.
Section B is the accident benefits portion of every Alberta automobile policy. It is no-fault coverage, meaning it pays whether you caused the collision, someone else did, or nobody is sure yet. It comes from your own insurer.
This is separate from any claim against an at-fault driver. That claim is about compensation. Section B is about getting you treated now.
What it funds
- Physiotherapy, chiropractic and adjunct therapy
- Registered massage therapy, where part of an approved treatment plan
- Psychology and counselling for collision-related psychological injury
- Prescriptions, diagnostic imaging and medical supplies
- A portion of lost income where you cannot work
The current limits
Medical and rehabilitation benefits are currently capped at $50,000 over the two years following the collision. In practice most people treating for a straightforward soft tissue injury use a fraction of that.
These limits change on 1 January 2027, when Alberta’s Care-First system replaces them with unlimited eligible expenses over a lifetime.
How it works at the clinic
Bring your claim number and adjuster details to the first appointment. We bill your insurer directly, complete the required treatment plans and progress reports, and correspond with the adjuster so you do not have to.
Related questions
What does Section B cover in Alberta?
Physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage therapy, psychology, prescriptions, diagnostics and a portion of lost income, following a collision. It is paid by your own insurer regardless of fault.
Does Section B cover massage therapy?
Yes, where it forms part of an approved treatment plan. It is usually delivered alongside physiotherapy rather than as a standalone service.
Does Section B depend on who was at fault?
No. Section B is no-fault accident benefits coverage. It pays regardless of who caused the collision, which is why there is no reason to delay treatment while fault is being determined.
Is there a limit to how much treatment Section B covers?
Yes, and it depends on the diagnosis. Sprains, strains and whiplash-associated disorder follow the protocol amounts; other injuries are covered up to the policy limit. Vertex tracks this so you are told before a limit is reached, not after.
Can I see a massage therapist or psychologist under Section B?
Yes. Massage therapy and psychology are covered under Section B alongside physiotherapy, and both are available at Vertex. Each needs its own approval, which the clinic handles.
Does using Section B raise my insurance premiums?
Section B is an accident benefit rather than a fault claim. Questions about premiums are for your insurer or broker; the clinic cannot advise on that.
