What Is Tuina Massage Edmonton?

Tuina (pronounced ‘twee-nah’) is the manual therapy of traditional Chinese medicine. It uses pressing, kneading, rolling, grasping and stretching techniques applied to muscles, joints and acupuncture points, often through clothing and without oil. It shares some techniques with Western massage and manual therapy but is organised around the same framework as acupuncture, and at Vertex physiotherapy, a registered acupuncturist, either as a stand-alone treatment or in the same appointment as acupuncture. It is commonly used for neck, shoulder and back pain, stiffness, headaches and general tension.

Tuina At Vertex Physiotherapy In Edmonton

What to Expect During a Tuina Massage Edmonton Session

The practitioner takes a history, examines the painful area and the movements that provoke it, and then works through the relevant muscles and channels with a sequence of techniques: rolling with the back of the hand, kneading with the thumb or palm, pressing specific points, and passive movement or stretching of the joints. Pressure ranges from light to firm and is adjusted to you.

Sessions run thirty to sixty minutes. Tuina can be combined with acupuncture in a single appointment, and you remain clothed in loose, comfortable clothing.

How Does Tuina Massage Differ From Massage and Physiotherapy?

Compared with Western massage, tuina is more focused on specific points and channels and more likely to include joint movement; it is generally done without oil and through clothing. Compared with physiotherapy manual therapy, it sits inside the TCM framework rather than a biomedical one, and the practitioner is registered with the College of Acupuncturists of Alberta rather than the physiotherapy college.

Many people at Vertex physiotherapy use more than one: physiotherapy for assessment and exercise, tuina or acupuncture for symptom relief. With your permission, practitioners share notes.

What Conditions Is Tuina Massage Commonly Used For?

Tuina is not appropriate over acute injuries with swelling, fractures, skin infections or certain medical conditions; the practitioner screens for these at the first visit.

  • Neck and shoulder tension and pain
  • Low back pain and stiffness
  • Tension-type headaches
  • Muscle tightness after work or training
  • General stress and poor sleep, as part of a TCM approach
